Caelum Academy Wiki

Caelum Academy, often simply referred to as Caelum, is an academy RP setting within Final Fantasy XIV by Square Enix.

At the center of it are students, who are inexperienced people wanting to improve their skills and make better lives for themselves. The academy offers them an education at no cost, a result of its investment in them. Students are taught by passionate teachers and lecturers led by the academy's IC administration, the Assembly of Regents. Caelum also has personnel, ranging from chefs to gardeners, who keep the academy running.

From the school calendar and the student council to houses and progression, Caelum strives to create an environment that feels immersive, alive, and rewarding. It uses RPG-like mechanics for progression. A character's event attendance record can be considered their stats or attributes, their school classification (sophomore, etc.) can be considered their level, and finally their school can be considered a job track. For instance, after enough experience, a student can become a knight, scholar, academic, or engineer.

The setting follows a major overarching story involving a political conflict between four noble houses of Ishgard, the Caelum MSQ (main story quest), giving people the sense that they are in a living, breathing world that is in constant flux. People's actions matter, and they can have deep consequences on the story.

Caelum means heaven in Latin. The community's name alludes to the setting's Ishgardian roots and focus on the story of Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward.

Structure

Assembly of Regents

The regents of Caelum

Caelum Academy is led by Headmistress Adelaine de Caelumont. She serves as the head of the IC administration, known as the Assembly of Regents, which has thirteen members:

  1. Headmistress
  2. Vice Headmaster
  3. Dean of the School of Combat
  4. Dean of the School of Magic
  5. Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences
  6. Dean of the School of Medicine
  7. Treasurer
  8. Captain of the Caelum Guard
  9. Envoy of External Affairs
  10. Chief Librarian
  11. Estate Warden
  12. Quartermaster
  13. Student Council President

The Assembly of Regents oversees Caelum's teachers, lecturers, personnel, and students.

Schools

Caelum Academy is divided into four schools, each led by a dean:

  1. The School of Combat
  2. The School of Magic
  3. The School of Arts and Sciences
  4. The School of Medicine

Houses

The student body is distributed among four houses:

  1. House Phoenix
  2. House Leviathan
  3. House Garuda
  4. House Titan

Security Forces

Caelum is protected by the Caelum Guard, a body in charge of protecting students and Caelum as a whole from all threats.

Parent Entity

The Knightly Order and the Conservatory

The Knightly Order and the Conservatory

Caelum Academy itself is the property of House Caelumont, a noble house in Ishgard. House Caelumont is composed of

  1. Count Mars de Caelumont, the head of the House
  2. The House Lords, the House's nobility
  3. The Knightly Order, House Caelumont's military arm
  4. The Conservatory, House Caelumont's scholarly arm
  5. Caelum Academy, House Caelumont's educational institution

Caelum graduates often join either the Knightly Order as knights (who can be eventually promoted to captains) or the Conservatory as scholars, scientists, or engineers (who can eventually be promoted to fellows).

Note: There is no separate community for these IC entities; they're all part of the Caelum community only. While the community's main focus is the academy itself, both the Knightly Order and the Conservatory play important roles in Caelum's main story.

Roles

Class

A student attending a class

New members at Caelum can choose one of four roles:

  1. Student
  2. Personnel
  3. Lecturer
  4. Teacher

They vary in level of responsibility and purpose.

Student

Student

The student role

A standard role without any DMing responsibilities suitable for both new and veteran RPers. They have no minimum attendance requirements either. Their main purpose is to attend events. They also have the option to open a student club.

Personnel

Personnel

The personnel role

Non-instructional employees of Caelum such as chefs, janitors, gardeners, and guards. They have to host events called episodes, which have a fun slice-of-life focus and serve as a break from the more academic-oriented classes and lectures, at least once a month. Given their non-academic nature, episodes don't count towards character progression (but they count for house points as well as total monthly attendance points).

Lecturer

Lecturer

The lecturer role

Instructional Caelum staff who host lectures at least once a month. The main difference they have from teachers is that lectures follow a looser schedule than classes, as they do not have to be regularly scheduled. Instead, they can be held on a different date every month. In addition, lectures can change their topics (though they must still all be related to the school the lecturer belongs to). In this way, lectures can be considered shorter classes, or one-offs. The lecturer position is perfect for DMs who cannot commit to a specific schedule. A downside, however, is that every lecture needs to be scheduled individually. Only classes can be recurring events. This means that only teachers can claim consistent slots on the calendar.

Teacher

Teacher

The teacher role

The main instructional staff of Caelum. At least twice a month, they have to host classes. They are regularly-scheduled RP events based on a specific and consistent topic. In some cases, classes may be hosted weekly.

Note: All events are scheduled in two-hour slots on the calendar, at minimum, though their actual duration can be less than this.

Caelum Schools

Caelum is divided into three schools, each giving characters a specific content focus, identity, and goal, defining progression in this RP setting. They are a collection of facilities, administrators, faculty, classes/lectures, and students all centered on a specific area of study. Each school is led by a dean, who is responsible for the school's success and is part of the Caelum leadership, the Assembly of Regents.

School of Combat

School of Combat

The School of Combat

The school that teaches combatants techniques employing physical force, through weapons such as blades, lances, or projectiles.

School of Magic

School of Magic

The School of Magic

The school that trains magic-focused combatants in the art of destructive spellcasting, through subjects such as arcanima or thaumaturgy, and in the art of curative spellcasting, through conjury and healing-focused arcanima, among other topics.

School of Arts and Sciences

School of Arts and Sciences

The School of Arts and Sciences

The school that trains non-combatants focused on liberal arts subjects such as history, languages, social studies, music, math, and philosophy. It also covers scientific disciplines such as alchemy, cosmology, geology, and biology, as well as engineering topics including magitek, airships, civil infrastructure, and equipment forging, among others.

School of Medicine

School of Medicine

The School of Medicine

Dedicated to the healing arts both mundane and aetherical, the School of Medicine trains aspiring medics, chirurgeons, and restorative magi in the science of biologos, anatomy, aetherology, and the ethics of care. Whether through traditional remedies or spellcraft, students are taught to mend body and mind with precision, compassion, and discipline—preparing them to safeguard life on and beyond the battlefield.

Onboarding

Onboarding Cover

A new student being given a tour

It all begins with the New Character Registration form found in #apps-and-docs in the Caelum Discord server. Here, the admin team gets the opportunity to learn more about you and your RP character. After being accepted, you'll be assigned to one of the four houses of Caelum, and you'll be able to choose a main school for your character, which will serve as the character's main progression path. (This can be changed later, though.)

Then, different members of the IC administration will hold an IC interview with your character. (This is just a formality. By this point you've already been accepted.)

Finally, admins, the Student Council, or other tour guides will give you a tour and give you a uniform (if the character is a student). You'll also get the opportunity to attend the weekly social for new members, where you can meet academy veterans as well as other new members in the community, on the weekend. Note: If you'd like to add alts at Caelum, you have to fill out the New Character Registration form for each of them. That is the only way to introduce a new character officially and have it registered under your name with Ceres, a program made by Seraphine (@bluesanctuary) specifically for Caelum.

Houses

Caelum Houses

The four houses of Caelum

At Caelum, students are assigned to one of four different houses. The Caelum regents created them in an effort to increase rapport between students and push every student to become a better version of themselves through friendly competition.

Every house is associated with a color and theme: House Phoenix (red), House Leviathan (blue), House Garuda (green), and House Titan (yellow). Traditionally, House Phoenix and House Leviathan have been rivals for years, a similar relationship to that of Garuda and Titan. Their relationships are in constant flux, however. Who knows what their relationships will look like in the future?

Students from each house can be identified by the color of their uniforms. The secondary dye channel of the uniforms is used for this purpose. In addition, belonging to a house grants access to its dorm ICly as well as a private channel exclusive to that house. Each house has a dedicated homeroom teacher, who serves as a counselor and guide for its members.

Houses are in constant competition with each other. Ceres keeps a monthly tally of house points, which can be gained in a variety of ways (e.g., winning special events such as sparring tournaments as a team). The most notable way of earning these points, however, is just attending official RP events. Every time a member of a house attends an event, they gain a point for their house. At the end of the month, Ceres declares a winner among the houses and gives them the Top House role, which gives its members not only bragging rights but access to different perks. Trophies, for instance, are given to houses who win certain contests, and these are displayed in the house's dorms.

A house is a place for your character to find their lifelong friends. Or... perhaps bitter rivals? Either way, you will have to work together to achieve supremacy.

Implementation detail: Ceres automatically assigns you to a house when we accept your application. Houses function on a per-account basis. However, if you feel strongly about being in a specific house, please DM an admin to ask for a transfer.

House Phoenix

House Phoenix

House Phoenix dorm

The theme of House Phoenix is fire and vitality.

Torches surround its dorm, firelight ever-present. Fixtures such as its billiard table and Steppe kitchen display the house's lively atmosphere. Its burning candles represent the finiteness of life and its eventual rebirth through the flames of Phoenix.

In different cultures, red is associated with life and energy. The color chosen to represent the house, Dalamud red, alludes to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and its background story, where Dalamud's descent symbolized the rebirth of FFXIV itself.

House Leviathan

House Leviathan

House Leviathan dorm

House Leviathan has a different theme: water and insight.

House Leviathan's dorm evokes the feeling of being deep underwater. Bridges connect different areas of the flooded dorm.

House Leviathan's dark blue symbolizes the ability to see the truth that lies deep underneath the surface. Its astroscope represents identifying the grand scheme of things beyond our immediate surroundings and limited senses.

House Garuda

House Garuda

House Garuda dorm

House Garuda has a theme fitting its namesake: wind and freedom.

The central idea behind its dorm is a bird's nest in a jungle. Foliage confines its first floor, evoking a sense of freedom through wilderness. Its three-story floor plan, which progressively increases in radiance as the visitor ascends, represents a bird rising towards the sky. Its couch suspended in the air, held by metal pillars, symbolizes a bird perched on the branch of a tree.

House Titan

House Titan

House Titan dorm

Everything about Titan exemplifies an unmovable force; that is why its house's theme is earth and endurance.

The rough, rocky surfaces of this dorm evoke a feeling of being deep underground. Beige carpet creates the illusion of a desert's sands. The central pillar supporting the second floor displays the central theme of endurance: the strength to withstand the test of time and never crumble under pressure.

It is also the only dorm to include individual rooms for students, representing the formation of a fortress inside of oneself.

Student Uniforms

As an academy-focused RP setting, Caelum requires students to wear a school uniform at all times (unless a specific event requires a specific outfit). On Sundays (as well as for Fight Night events), this uniform rule is suspended, letting people wear their regular clothes. This is a list of acceptable pieces for the uniform.

School Calendar

Caelum functions on a term system, each lasting 4 months: Star (January-April), Sun (May-August), and Moon (September-December).

At the end of a term, all normal classes and lectures are put on pause, and Caelum enters Exam Week, during which the faculty focuses on administering exams to advance student to the next classification (e.g., from freshman to sophomore). Make-up exams for people who cannot make it to the original dates are available.

Implementation detail: If you have more than one character who needs to advance to the next classification during the same term, you only have to participate with one character to advance them all. We're aware that requiring attendance from each would be too burdensome, and, in some cases, impossible. Registering for these exams is entirely voluntary. That is, each player always has agency over their character's progression. If you feel that your character shouldn't be ready to advance at the end of the term, you can postpone exam registration until later.

Exam Week is followed by a two-week vacation, where Caelum activities shift to leisure activities such as camping, beach trips, etc.

Progression System

Caelum Tracks

Caelum graduates

Progression is the central system at Caelum. A character's school defines their path for progression. The following is a detailed explanation of the system.

Whenever one of your characters attends a Caelum MSQ event, class, or lecture, they gain points towards their progression and graduation.

Students are classified into four ranks:

  1. Freshman
  2. Sophomore
  3. Junior
  4. Senior

During their time at Caelum, students will progress through these classifications and graduate after their senior year. Graduates gain new roles and have the opportunity to join House Caelumont, Caelum's parent entitity, and be deployed on high-level missions, earning a salary.

• The School of Combat and School of Magic let students become knights for House Caelumont, in combat-focused roles.

• The School of Arts and Sciences let students become scholars, scientists, or engineers for House Caelumont, in diplomacy, research, and infrastructure roles.

At the end of each term, students will be able to register for exams during Exam Week and advance their classification. To register for an exam, students will need to have reached certain attendance thresholds depending on their current classification. In summary, to apply for the next classification, a student must have earned 10 attendance points in their main school, 5 elective points from a second school, and 5 elective points from a third school.

Point Distribution for Advancement

1. Freshman to Sophomore: [10 points from their main school, 5 from a second school, 5 from a third school]
2. Sophomore to Junior: [20 points from their main school, 10 from a second school, 10 from a third school]
3. Junior to Senior: [30 points from their main school, 15 from a second school, 15 from a third school]
4. Senior to Graduate: [40 points from their main school, 20 from a second school, 20 from a third school]

That is, to graduate, characters will need to have attended 80 events in total. These points are cumulative. For example, after earning 20 points, a new sophomore only needs to earn another 20 to sign up for exams at the end of the term to advance to junior. The amount of time required to advance between student classifications is always constant.

Event Tags

Each event at Caelum has a specific event type tag viewable under the event's description on Discord and on the Google calendar. These are

  1. School of Combat
  2. School of Magic
  3. School of Arts and Sciences
  4. School of Medicine
  5. Adventure
  6. Student Club
  7. Battle
  8. Non-Battle
  9. Miscellaneous

The last two are classifications used for events that don't necessarily fall under any specific school, but several. The following is a technical explanation of how Ceres handles these classifications.

For regular events with a specific school tag (e.g., School of Combat), the event will give a point corresponding to that specific school. For example, if a School of Magic student attends a School of Combat event, Ceres will give them a School of Combat point.

For levequests and tales, Ceres will give the character one adventure point.

For battle events, Ceres will give a point towards the person's main school if their main school is battle-focused (Combat or Magic). If the person's school is non-combat (Arts and Sciences or Medicine), it will increment a point for one of the battle schools chosen at random.

Similarly, non-battle events will give a point towards the person's main school if their main school is not battle-focused (Arts and Sciences or Medicine). If the person's school is battle-focused (Combat or Magic), it will increment a point for one of the non-battle schools chosen at random.

For miscellaneous events, Ceres will give a point towards the person's main school regardless of what their main school is. For instance, if a School of Arts and Sciences student attends a Miscellaneous event, Ceres will give them a point towards the School of Arts and Sciences.

In addition, the event's DM gets two points instead of one to account for their time spent preparing the event.

Switching Schools

While it's possible for any character to switch schools at any time, it has some implications worth mentioning.

(1) The temporary monthly points tracked by Ceres for individual school monthly rankings are immediately reset for that character. This is done to avoids situations where someone attends, say, 10 School of Combat classes and then switches at the end of the month to the School of Arts and Sciences to gain the top Arts and Sciences spot that month without attending a single Arts and Sciences class. However, the character's permanent attendance record is untouched; they keep all their progress.

(2) A student's classification is never reset, but any further progression will be determined by the student's new school. For example, if a junior School of Combat student transfers to the School of Arts and Sciences, they keep their junior status, but to advance and become a senior as a School of Arts and Sciences student, they'll need 30 School of School of Arts and Sciences (alongside 15 from a second school and 15 from a third school, though presumably these might have already been earned during their time in the School of Combat).

Further Advancement

After graduation, exceptional knights can be promoted to captain, head of the Caelum Guard, or grand master of the Knightly Order, House Caelumont's military arm.

Exceptional scholars, scientists, and engineers can likewise be promoted to fellow or grand sage of the Conservatory, House Caelumont's scholarly arm.

Any graduate can eventually become a dean of the school they graduated from or join the Assembly of Regents in any of its roles, including headmaster/headmistress.

Graduate Uniforms

Graduates from the different schools are given uniforms by the Caelum administration, to be worn during high-level missions. (These are FFXIV Online Store items that admins gift to graduates, in appreciation of their commitment to the setting.)

Notes

To receive attendance points, people must have been present for at least half the duration of the event.

It's not possible to apply for a graduate role directly. Only characters that have gone through the progression system can get a graduate role.

It's also not possible for one character to graduate from more than one school.

There is no minimum attendance requirement for students. People can attend as few or as many classes as they please.

Monthly Rankings

Ceres keeps track of many variables in the community. Most are permanent, except a few that are considered on a monthly basis. These are

  1. Overall attendance: how many events someone attended across all their characters that month.
  2. Attendance by school: how many classes a character attended corresponding to their main school that month.
  3. House points: the cumulative efforts of each member of a house that month, most influenced by the total event attendance of all members of the house.

At the end of the month, Ceres gives a special role for the top three people with the highest overall attendance: Caelestia (heavenly). In the case of ties for third place, Ceres will list everyone who tied for the position. This makes it possible for more than three people to have the Caelestia role, in that circumstance.

The characters who attended the most classes corresponding to their main school will be announced by Ceres at the end of the month as well. Normally, this will be only one character, but ties are handled in the manner described before as well. There is no special role for this, however.

The monthly competition between houses culminates at the end of each month, where the Ceres declares a winner and gives every member belonging to that house the Top House role for a month. This carries with it not just notoriety but special perks that vary from month to month. (Note: These points reset on a monthly basis, but points corresponding to each character's progression, their attendance record, is permanent.)

Student Council

Student Council

Student Council president

The Caelum Student Council is the academy's student leadership. They're in charge of directing different student-led initiatives for policy changes, enforcing rules, promoting school spirit, approving student clubs, overseeing large-scale events (such as All Saints' Wake [Halloween]), allocating school funds for different activities, and resolving disputes between students. Its leader, the Student Council president, is part of the Assembly of Regents, the academy's IC leadership, which includes deans and the headmistress. They get to attend meetings with the leadership and influence their opinions and choices as a student representative. The Student Council's agenda can shape many aspects of student life.

At the end of every term, Caelum Academy holds elections for characters to join the Student Council. Ceres manages this system, ensuring election integrity by making sure people who vote are registered members of Caelum and also making sure they can only vote once. The Student Council can have only seven members. Students get to vote for one person as their Student Council president as well.

Event Types

Members of Caelum have a variety of RP events to choose from.

Classes

They are the bread-and-butter of the academy: regularly-scheduled RP events based on a specific and consistent topic. In some cases, classes may be hosted weekly.

Lectures

These are the class equivalent for lecturers. The main difference is that lectures follow a looser schedule than classes, as they do not have to be regularly scheduled. Instead, they can be held on a different date every month. In addition, lectures can change their topics (though they must still all be related to the school the lecturer belongs to). In this way, lectures can be considered shorter classes, or one-offs.

Episodes

Caelum personnel are in charge of hosting these, which have a fun slice-of-life focus and serve as a break from the more academic-oriented classes and lectures. Examples include a cooking competition or an excursion into Gridania in search of specific types of plants.

Student Council Events

These are events hosted by the Student Council to generate fun RP activity. They can vary from a protest to increase food options in the cafeteria to seasonal events such as Valentione's Day (Valentine's), All Saints' Wake (Halloween), and Starlight (Christmas) celebrations.

FATEs

At Caelum, you never know what might happen within academy grounds at any given time. The administration and other trusted DMs are in charge of an RP FATE system (inspired by FFXIV's Full Active Time Events), where all kinds of RP events can happen inside the academy without being advertised anywhere.

From chaotic slice-of-life events to darker themes, you never know what you might encounter on campus. Keeping your character on academy grounds can lead to new RP opportunities as the setting is brought to life.

When it comes to FATEs , grab your friends and keep your eyes peeled; excitement can come from any corner.

Lf-RPs

Also known as looking-for-rp, these are unofficial, often unplanned events involving the academy or its members. A key part of Lf-RPs is that they do not necessarily have a DM, whereas all other types of events do. This makes Lf-RPs an excellent option for students and generally people new to RP to gain confidence in event hosting. These are posted in the #lf-rp channel and ping the Lf-RP role. Notably, these events do not count for character progression or any other points tracked by Ceres (though they're still an excellent option for characters to develop lasting connections, and we strongly encourage hosting them).

Important note: Lf-RPs cannot be held when there is already an event underway, however, unless that event is another Lf-RP or a FATE event. Overlap is allowed in such cases.

Student Clubs

Students can create clubs and host events for other students. These can be considered special types of Lf-RPs that ping the @Student Club Event role. Their purpose is mostly informal: creating slice-of-life moments.

Missions

Caelum graduates employed by House Caelumont are sent on missions with high-level objectives. Knights, scholars, scientists, and engineers take center stage here. Students may sometimes join these events under the supervision of a graduate.

Caelum MSQ

The Caelum setting follows a major overarching story involving a political conflict between four noble houses of Ishgard. Caelum MSQ events further this story, one that anyone can impact and push in a different direction.

Note: All events are scheduled in two-hour slots on the calendar, at minimum, though their actual duration can be less than this.

The Knightly Order and the Conservatory

The Knightly Order and the Conservatory

The Knightly Order and the Conservatory

They are House Caelumont's military and scholarly arms, respectively. Caelum graduates have the opportunity to join the Knightly Order as knights and the Conservatory as academics and engineers. In these positions, they can be sent on missions, RP events with high-level objectives commensurate with these veterans' level of skill and experience. They're also highly influential in Caelum MSQ events.

Caelum Lore

Shortly after the founding of Ishgard, Abel Caen and his knights founded House Caen, seeking to prove themselves in the Dragonsong War. After a short period of obscurity, it quickly rose to prominence among the noble houses of Ishgard and found extraordinary prosperity and abundance, a period referred to by Caen scholars as the [Gilded Age]. It was during this period that many foundations of Caen nobility and culture were established. By the time of Abel's death, House Caen had become a monumental force. Its riches, prominence, and military might rose with each passing day; nothing seemed out of reach. This period lasted for several generations of Caen nobles. However, the Gilded Age was brought to a sudden halt. Ancient accounts of this period tell of an illness that spread throughout House Caen, which almost ended its noble line. As a result, House Caen quickly fell from prominence and into disrepair, ushering in a period known as the [Nightfall], a time of particular interest for scholars. The exact causes of the house's fall from prominence are still debated today. It was here that political turmoil led its nobles to split into four houses, which have lived on to this day:

• House Caelumont

• House Vesperaux

• House Roselune

• House Astralis

The foundation of these houses led to the age of the [Tetrad]. The four houses have existed in moderate prosperity since. Like their predecessor, these houses are renowned for their contribution to Ishgard's military might. Outward allies, the houses maintain close ties, a result of their shared legacy. Ever since House Caen's fall from prominence, there has been a longing among its nobility to return to the Gilded Age, a feeling of fervent nostalgia. Few among them have become as preoccupied with this notion as Claude de Caelumont, House Caelumont's current grand sage of the Conservatory, the house's scholarly institution. He brought to the house historical accounts that spoke of a mystical artifact in House Caen's employ, something accounts say they wielded to great effect to achieve their renowned position. Despite conflicting accounts in the historical record, Claude believed there were sufficient reasons to investigate this story further. This notion found its way to Count Roch de Caelumont's ears in recent times. Claude's research and advice instilled in Roch the belief that only the combined resources of the four houses could elucidate their understanding of this artifact. If there ever was such a thing, it was House Caen's birthright, Roch thought. It was here that a movement to unite the four houses under their ancestral banner began. Though initially lacking momentum, the idea took a turn in recent times: An Ishgard in flux presented the perfect opportunity for the minor houses of Ishgard to reimagine their position. Shifts in political and economic conditions threatened to disrupt the four houses' militaristic industries and consequently their resources and way of life. Rising factions within each house also threatened their stability, with some nobles speaking of the return of the Nightfall.

It was in this precarious position that Roch de Caelumont convinced each house's nobility to join his cause and bring about the return of House Caen. The claim to the Caen throne naturally fell to House Caelumont, which accommodated the last direct patrilineal descendants of Abel Caen: Roch and his son, Mars. However, Roch's ambitions met a sudden end when house attendants found his lifeless body in his bedroom, alongside that of his wife, Countess Elodie. Roch's son, 15-year-old Mars, subsequently had his right to the throne questioned by the other houses as claims of Countess Elodie's commoner origins rose to prominence. Sensing the safety of young Mars under threat, House Caelumont's lords made him count to grant him the house's full protection, despite his age.

Under the belief that dark motives were at play, the house's lords sought to tip the scales by making use of Caelum Academy, long an institution for Ishgardian nobles founded by House Caelumont. They appointed Adelaine de Caelumont, aunt to young Mars, as headmistress. At her direction, the academy recently opened its doors to foreigners for the first time in its history, in search of individuals from all over the star to join as knights and academics for the house.

The claim to the throne now in question, danger lurks in the shadows. As in any state of disarray, it's difficult to tell friend from foe. The first die has already been cast; the board set in motion, with most players yet to show their hands. Who will ultimately lay claim to the Caen throne?
